Tomorrow, March 14, is officially Pi Day, but since we're not in school this Friday, we are celebrating today. 3rd through 5th Graders are participating in the first Aveson Pi Day by eating pizza "pie", as well as a variety of dessert pies, many homemade. They created a 200 digit Pi Daisy Chain, each link representing a digit in the series, on display in the auditorium (K-2 contributed by creating the "3" and decimal point to start off the chain). The students are also engaging in a memorization contest. We wish all the participants good luck!

Some Facts about Memorizing Pi

According to Wikipedia, the current world record is 100,000 decimal places, set on October 3, 2006 by Akira Haraguchi. However, on the website http://www.pi-world-ranking-list.com/, Chao Lu holds the world's record at 67,890 digits.

There are many ways to memorize π. The most common technique is to memorize a sentence in which the number of letters in each word is equal to the corresponding digit of π. For example, just memorize the following simple phrase: "I wish I could recollect pi easily today" for the first 8 decimal digits.

Some other mnemonics (memorization tricks) include the use of piems, which are poems that represent π in a way such that the length of each word (in letters) represents a digit. This poem gives the first 20 digits, and uses the separation of the poem's title and main body to represent the decimal point (note the error: the word remember has 8 letters instead of 9):

Pie
I wish I could remember pi
Eureka, cried the great inventor
Christmas pudding, Christmas pie
Is the problem's very center.

Another, more poetic 30 digit version is:

Sir, I send a rhyme excelling,
In sacred truth and rigid spelling,
Numerical sprites elucidate,
For me the lexicon's dull weight,
If nature gain, not you complain
Tho' Dr Johnson fulminate.

From the mouths of students...

One of our first graders made it very clear that math was not a subject that she enjoyed. After several days of observing the student start down the road to becoming an enthusiastic mathematician by being engaged in classroom activities, I approached her...
Teacher: It looks like you are starting to like math.
Student: No, I still don't like math.
Teacher: You are doing such a wonderful job with your work in class I thought that you were enjoying it.
Student: Oh yes, I like the work we are doing in class, but this isn't math.

The following week, the same student reported that she had been playing some of our class games at home. At least now her parents understand that we are, in fact, doing math at school even though the student may not believe it.

If you have any stories from your D3 mathematician, please pass them along and, with your permission, I will happily post them for others to enjoy as well.
